Glamour Absolute Modern Vintage Font FAQs...

Glamour Absolute Font - How do I use Glamour Absolute in Canva?

A beginners guide to using alternate font files with a keymap in applications like Canva...

Q : Why are there extra fonts?

A : For people without Opentype capable software (like Canva users) :
Canva doesn’t support the ‘all in one’ Glamour main font that has the fancy characters included in it. BUT you can request a download from us which contains the extra two ‘Alt’ fonts (named GlamourAbsolute_Alt1.otf and GlamourAbsolute_Alt2.otf).

Use these, in addition to the main font, to type the separate fancy letters out where you need them in your word. (Instructions below)

Update
Nicky recently updated the download to include these additional files. Please check your download for a folder called "Other" (renamed to "HELP" in a more recent update). You will find the keymap and additional files in this folder. If you don't have this folder, simply re-download Glamour Absolute or drop us an email to support@nickylaatz.com and we will send over the files :)

Q: Why is there gobbledygook when I type with one of the Alternate fonts?

A: Glamour Absolute has many extra fancy letters, there are more than one fancy letter for some characters, for example - there are three fancy lowercase ‘g’ letters. The extra alternate (‘ALT’) fonts, contains all these extra letters in a random sequence - and are not the regular A-Z fonts you’d expect, but rather fonts containing a set of all the fancy letters randomly.

So you cannot type with them like a normal font - you have to ‘look up’ which fancy letters are assigned to which keys of your computer keyboard.

Q: How do I know which character on my keyboard corresponds to the fancy letter I want to type with the Alternate fonts ?

A: You can use the PDF keymaps to see which letters correspond with which characters on your keyboard. The small letter above the fancy letter, is the key on the keyboard you need to push to make that letter with the Alternate font you are using.

Q:  How do I use the Alternate Fonts ?

A : This is how you use them :
  1. You can request the download from us by sending us your proof of purchase to support@nickylaatz.com.
  2. Once you have received the Download, unzip it to your hard drive.
  3. After you unzip this file, you will be left with 2 folders. :
    1. Alternate letter fonts
      1. contains the two alternate (‘Alt’)  fonts
        1. GlamourAbsolute_Alt1.otf
        2. GlamourAbsolute_Alt2.otf
    2. HELP-Keymap to know which letters to type
      1. Contains 2 PDF keymap files
As mentioned above, to type out a particular fancy letter using one of these fonts - you have to look up in the keymap PDFs (included) which key on your keyboard corresponds to the fancy letter you are wanting to type:

For example if you want to type out the fancy letter for uppercase ’T’
  1. Go look at both the PDF files to find where it is
  2. then look at the smaller letter ABOVE it.
  3. In this example, you will see that the fancy curly  ’T' it is in the ‘Alt1' font (in the Alt1 PDF), and it has the small letter ‘a’ just above it...
  4. So you can type the fancy 'T' by hitting the lowercase ‘a’ on the keyboard while typing with the 'Alt1' font selected :)
Q: How do I use them specifically in Canva to type out some fancy letters I want? (Video link at end - but please read this first)

A: Go to Canva. Make sure you upload ALL three fonts to Canva for it to work: The original main font AND the extra two alternate ('Alt') fonts :
  • GlamourAbsolute_Regular.otf
  • GlamourAbsolute_Alt1.otf
  • GlamourAbsolute_Alt2.otf
Once installed on Canva:
  1. Type your word out with plain letters using the main font ( “GlamourAbsolute_Regular.otf”)
  2. Decide on which fancy letter you want to replace in that word.
  3. Say for example you want the ‘e’ ro be a fancy curly e.
  4. Open your PDF’s, locate the fancy e, take note of :
    1. Which PDF it is ( Alt1 font or Alt2 font) and
    2. Which small letter is above the fancy e. In this case the fancy ‘e’ has the small letter ‘q’ above it. SO -> For the fancy e - you will see it is in the ALT1 PDF, and the character above it is ‘q’ : meaning you need to hit ‘q' on the keyboard while typing with the 'Alt 1' font, to make the fancy e.
  5. Highlight the ‘e' in your word in Canva, change it to the letter ‘q’ and straight afterwards, with the letter ‘q' still highlighted, select the Alt1 font ( GlamourAbsolute_Alt1.otf)   from your font list on Canva. The fancy ‘e' will now be in place of the original ‘q'. Do the same with any other fancy letters you want.

I hope this helps :)

Glamour Absolute Font - Is the noise pack in Glamour Absolute the same as Dust Magic?

No they are different :)

Noise adds a very fine texture, while dust adds a more bitty/gritty type texture.

The "Add some noise" preview image on Glamour Absolute shows the noise before and after overlay.

The preview images in Dust Magic show the before and after pics:

Glamour Absolute - How do I access the extended characters in Microsoft Word?

You can access the extended characters through the Symbols dialog.

This does depend on your version as in older versions I am not sure it is supported.

Nicky noticed that when accessing the Advanced Typography of the Format Fonts dialog, that the preview in that window does not always show the extended ligatures as the preview block is very small. You can just select the one you want and then click OK and the ligature will be displayed correctly on the page. Microsoft Word is not the ideal tool for working with this type of font so you may need to make quite a few clicks to get the desired look...

Take a quick look at explainer video below...

Glamour Absolute - Why can't I see the extended characters in the font preview?

The previews are there for you to test your text in a general sense using the standard character set of each font in the family, but for the most part cannot access the alternate letters.

For this you will need an application like Photoshop or Illustrator to access the Open Type features.

Rest assured that they are included in the download :)

Glamour Absolute - Why does this font not show all the characters in Microsoft Word?

Microsoft Word is not the ideal tool for working with this type of font, ideally it would be better to use Photoshop or Illustrator...

Nicky has created a new version of Glamour Absolute that works a little better with Microsoft Word. Once you have purchased the font from us, you can contact us for this additional download if you need to use the font in Microsoft Word.

Also just to note, that when using the new Word version of the font, that you will need to close word and uninstall the original font. Then open Word and ensure it is not there, then close word and install the new version. When you open word you will be able to tell if it has the new font by looking for the new name, Glamour Absolute Word.
